Stoneleigh-Burnham School held the 2016 Middle School Moving-Up Ceremony on Thursday, May 26 in the Capen Room. This tradition celebrates 8th grade students as they make the important transition from Middle School to Upper School the following year.
The ceremony started with a few words from Head of School Sally Mixsell, followed by an address by junior Molly Li, who was recently elected as the Head of Student Body for the 2016-17 school year. Molly encouraged students to “step out your comfort zone,” adding that her time at SBS has helped her grow from a shy and quiet young girl into a more confident student and leader who embraces her uniqueness. She said, “The reason we come into this world is to lead a unique and colorful life.” Read Molly’s full remarks on the school blog.
The Select Chorus performed “I’ll Always Remember You” by Miley Cyrus, then students were called up one at a time by their advisors to be more personally recognized. The advisors, teachers Allyson Bryant, Andrea Tehan Carnes, Charlotte Hogan, Bill Ivey, Meghan Lena, Meg Reilly, and Karen Suchenski, noted each student’s accomplishments, victories, uniqueness, and honorable traits, as well as any fond memories the advisor had with the student.
Middle School Dean Bill Ivey closed the ceremony with the annual poem that uses the middle schoolers’ words, “Something That I will Keep Forever.” Read the poem on our school blog.
