Welcome

If you had told a small town girl from Maine that she would live her life on three continents in five countries, she wouldn’t have believed you. All these decades later, I look back on a life full of wonderful surprises and important challenges. To arrive at Stoneleigh-Burnham at this stage in my life is a delightful and rewarding experience. I am delighted by the challenges and opportunities this beautiful school affords me to continue to grow and learn. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Sociology/Social Work from the University of Maine and my Master’s degree in Independent School Leadership from the Klingenstein Center at Teachers College, Columbia University. I have had the companionship of my husband, John Alter who has worked at nearly every school with me. Our three children endured too many moves across continents (Asia, Africa and North America) and are fabulous adults in spite of their disrupted education! A great joy in our lives today is our three-year-old granddaughter, Sulo, who lives only a few hours away in Brooklyn, NY. My commitment to all girls education is even stronger as a result of raising two daughters and now having a granddaughter.
