On March 29, 2021, the SBS Public Speaking & Debate team competed in their fifth tournament this season at Northfield Mount Hermon School. All tournaments this year have been via Zoom —a new format for all in the Debate Association of New England Independent School (DANEIS) league! This tournament featured competition in three rounds: first, Interpretive Reading; second, either Persuasive or After Dinner Speech; and third, Impromptu Speaking. Competitors at this event were Willa ’22, Elizabeth ’22, and Co-Presidents Breanna ’22 and McKenna ’22.
At the end of the tournament, SBS claimed victory in multiple areas. McKenna ’22 tied for 1st place in Interpretive Reading, with a reading she will take to competition at Virtual Worlds hosted by the South Korean Delegation (Worlds will happen virtually over 7 time zones from April 10 through April 26). At the Northfield Mount Hermon tournament, Breanna ranked as the 6th individual speaker of the whole tournament receiving an overall score, a score that separated her from the top speaker by just a few points. She also claimed 3rd place in the After Dinner Speaking Round.
SBS’s success at Northfield Mount Hermon followed tournament success at Kingswood-Oxford School on Sunday, February 7, 2021, where a strong team competed in a grueling day of speechmaking, competing in two rounds of either Impromptu or Ethical Dilemma and two rounds of After Dinner or Persuasive Speeches, all originally prepared. At this tournament, Breanna ’22 took 1st place in After Dinner, with high scores that ranked her as the Top Novice Speaker overall (for she is new to competition this year), and 2nd Top Ranking Speaker overall in the advanced division. Other SBS speakers who joined Breanna ’22 included Willa ’22, Noelle ’22, and McKenna ’22, all of whom received some personal best high scores.
Congratulations to all our speakers: Co-President Breanna ’22, Co-President Kate ’21, McKenna ’22, Kate ’22, Elizabeth ’22, Willa ’22, Noelle ’22, and Lilly ’23.
There is one more debate tournament taking place this year at Deerfield Academy. Anyone interested in joining Public Speaking & Debate for the upcoming academic year, or attending a SBS summer camp in preparation to do so, should contact Debate & Public Speaking Coach Karen Suchenski.
