All students in the middle school and 9th and 10th grades are required to attend class with their own iPad. Students may bring their own iPad to school or order one through the school. We view the iPad as an educational tool and not an end in itself. It is a digital toolbox and has opened up new possibilities, facilitated existing practice — and periodically sits patiently in backpacks awaiting the time when it is genuinely needed. There are countless ways that our teachers and students are using this tool to their advantage, and every day they are finding new ways to do so. It allows classmates to collaborate in real time, leveling the playing field for day and boarding students. Teachers can streamline their classroom prep time as well as create their own textbooks. English Learner (EL) students can quickly look up definitions, allowing them to stay engaged in their assignment or reading material. Connections are at the core of our school’s identity and our tablet initiative will continue to enhance that.
Our teachers continue to pursue and implement professional development to make the most of this versatile tool. Our Technology Department has been working with them to develop skills, share ideas, and explore possibilities. We have also learned a tremendous amount from our students about the collaborative possibilities in our hands.
