Dining at SBS

The Dining Room at Stoneleigh-Burnham School is a warm and inviting space with large windows overlooking the campus grounds. Wooden tables provide warmth and a homey feeling. With no assigned seating, the students, faculty and staff are able to share meals together, fostering a sense of community and family. The dining room is lively and friendly, where occasional cheers for favorite meals or choruses of Happy Birthday can be heard. Parents and guardians may order birthday cakes for their daughters throughout the year.

Our Dining Service Directors, Carrie Holmes and Jeff VanIderstine plan original menus that feature many local, sustainable ingredients while incorporating flavors from around the world. Our students, faculty and staff enjoy the Build-Your-Own Pho or Ramen Bowls, and so many other international favorites as well as classic crowd pleasers like chicken fingers, grilled cheeses, and home-made pizza. Our chefs enjoy showing off their culinary skills and the menus are full of variety and exciting theme meals to satisfy every student’s appetite.

The Dining staff makes many items from scratch so that menu choices are healthier, fresher, better-tasting, and may accommodate students with food allergies and sensitivities. Our directors and chefs are always willing to work with students who have food allergies or restrictions and work to clearly label the ingredients in our dining options. They offer Vegetarian, Vegan, Dairy Free and Gluten Free options, and have recently added a separate Gluten Free Toaster Station.

  • Breakfast: In addition to hot breakfast options in our Buffet, we have a cereal bar, a fruit salad, grapefruit and yogurt bar, a bagel and toast bar, and a fresh bakery item every day. Weekend Brunch also includes omelets and specials made to order by Chef Jeff VanIderstine.
  • Lunch and Dinner: Our hot Buffet features our daily entrees, vegetables, and sides. We have a Soup Station, and a generous Salad Bar with deli sandwich fixings, desserts, yogurts, and toppings.
  • Snack Breaks: We offer a daily snack break and fresh fruit like apples, bananas, oranges, and pears are always available. Everyone is welcome to come in throughout the day to refill their travel mugs at our extensive Beverage Bar that features flavored seltzers and waters, iced tea, lemonade, gatorade, milks, cocoa, teas and locally owned, organic, fair trade Pierce Brothers Dry Roasted Coffee.

The Dining Hall also provides refreshment and meals for other events throughout the year including bagged lunches for athletic teams and field trips, monthly Community Meals or Formal Meals with assigned seating, Mountain Day, Open Houses, Family Weekends, Holiday Parties, the annual Gingerbread House,  the 100 Nights Celebration, Commencement, Alumni Reunion and so much more. Dining Services also hosted the school’s 150th Anniversary Courtyard Dinner in the fall of 2019. The students are always excited to see refreshments at school events, surprise desserts or dessert buffets!

We are proud to say that students encouraged our recycling and composting programs here at Stoneleigh-Burnham. They initiated switching over to compostable single use containers in the building, and are committed to reducing waste. Once a year they hold a contest to see which class produces the least compost/waste in the dining hall. It’s a great way for each person to personally see how much food they are throwing away and adjust their dining habits.
