Dr. Greg Snedeker, instrumental music and economics teacher, published an article in the May 2018 issue of Mathematics Teacher, a journal published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. With much encouragement and help from Roger Turton, who is chair of the SBS math department, Snedeker wrote an article on the mathematical challenges of creating a piece of installation artwork that is installed in front of Geissler Gallery. The piece is called “Photon Translations” and incorporates all the subjects of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math). The installation artist who created the work is Terry Marashlian, who lives in Northfield, MA. Marashlian asked Snedeker to collaborate on making the piece into an interactive musical installation by installing chimes that would be powered by small solar panels. The article is written in an educational format that presents the mathematical problems that the pair faced in designing the artwork and then the solutions to those problems. The article was included as a part of the publication’s “Mathematical Lens” series.
