Middle School Science Teacher Andrea Tehan-Carnes announced that Ira Hysi ‘20 been accepted to participate in the University of Massachusetts ASPIRE Program. In this no-cost program, UMass graduate students guide high school students through the experience of research in a science and engineering lab. Students get hands-on experience in a lab, do experiments in polymer chemistry, physics, and engineering, learn about electron microscopes and 3D printers, and plan and run their own one-day independent project. This program was put together by UMASS MRSEC (Materials Research Science & Engineering Center) with the goal of introducing high school students to various aspects of polymer science and engineering that could not be taught in a conventional classroom. The program runs for five consecutive Saturday mornings in January and February.
