On Sunday, October 2, the Stoneleigh-Burnham School Debate and Public Speaking Society hosted its annual Public Speaking Tournament on campus. A total of 32 students from nine schools competed in Impromptu Speaking and Interpretive Reading, as well as in either After-Dinner or Persuasive Speaking. Stoneleigh-Burnham placed fourth overall as a team. Other notable results included Julia Thayer ’18 taking third place in Interpretive Reading, Srikari Tummla ’17 placing third in Persuasive Speaking, Annalie Gilbert Keith ’18 earning third in Persuasive Speaking, and Sophie Hathaway ’18 taking fourth in Interpretive Reading. Coaches noted that this was Lila Lofving’s ’20 first time competing in a tournament and commended her for her good effort. A big thank you also goes out to the four teachers and 15 students who volunteered at the tournament. The SBS Debate and Public Speaking Society’s next tournament is Sunday, October 9. The team travels to St. Sebastian’s School in Needham, Mass. for the Novice (grades 7-9) Parliamentary Extemporaneous Debate Tournament.
