SBS Debate & Public Speaking Coach Karen Suchenski reports that after a long but inspiring week at the International Independent Schools’ Public Speech Competition (IISPSC), Breanna ’22 and McKenna ’22 made it to finals in the Interpretive Reading Category.
“I’m very honored to have been given the opportunity to attend IISPSC and I’m beyond happy to have made it to finals. This was only my third tournament, and after hearing all of the other advanced competitors, I’ll be bringing the new skills I’ve learned from them with me into any tournaments I attend going forward. Overall, I’ve bettered myself as a speaker and I’m proud of my performance, and the performance of our entire team, this past weekend!” said Breanna.
McKenna earned 2nd Place in the category of Interpretive Reading and emerged 6th (out of 115 participants) in the tournament overall, earning her a spot at this years’ World Debate competition.
“I had an amazing experience at the IISPSC tournament last weekend. I think the most shocking announcement was hearing that I had qualified for Worlds! This is my second tournament, so I really wasn’t expecting it, but I am so excited and honored for this opportunity. I’m very thankful to our amazing coach, Karen Suchenski, without whom I couldn’t have done this,” said McKenna.
“Our SBS speakers continue to demonstrate the strength of their voices, even during virtual competitions. I am proud to say that this will be our 21st SBS Owl to qualify for Worlds in 21 years,” added Karen.
Out of 36 schools competing across eight time zones in final events last weekend, SBS placed in the Top 10 and was the second ranking USA team of the tournament.
