SBS Competes in Novice Debate Tournament

The SBS Debate and Public Speaking Society participated in the Novice Debate Tournament at St. Sebastian’s School in Needham on October 11, 2015. The tournament was for students in grades 7-9.

Lila Lofving ’20 and Juliana Merullo ’19 defeated St. Sebastian’s in the first round and topped Robury Latin School in the second round. While Lofving and Merullo lost the third round to Belmont Hill, they were only one point away from being undefeated. Also competing in the tournament were Ellie Flynn ’20 and Beatrice Brynda ’20.

Dr. Paul Bassett, head coach of the SBS Debate and Public Speaking Society, commended the team on their efforts and said the tournament was a good learning experience for novice debaters.

Next, the SBS Debate and Public Speaking Society is gearing up for the International Independent School Public Speaking Competition in Toronto on October 23. SBS will be among 51 schools from all over the world.
