Dominican Republic, March 2018

Join STEAM Coordinator Andrea Tehan Carnes and IB Science Teacher Meghan Lena for a science-inspired trip to the Dominican Republic! We are working together with Rustic Pathways to offer a trip that celebrates science, language and culture, community service, and allows time for relaxation, exploration, and reflection. Students will work alongside health care professionals on high-impact public health projects across the Dominican Republic. We will identify the health needs of rural, urban, wealthy, and impoverished communities and help develop meaningful public service initiatives. Participants will earn their Wilderness First Aid certification and apply their new skills to helping communities in need during a service project in a local community. We will explore the capital city of Santo Domingo, the rural province of Hato Mayor, and the beaches of Samaná.

Note: This leaves 7 days of Spring Break vacation after we return!

Trip cost: $2,395 + airfare (estimated at approximately $600), includes all local transportation, meals, etc.

Age requirement: Students must be 14 years of age before departure.

Switzerland and France, June 2018

The Hills are Alive… With the Sound of Stoneleigh-Burnham Students in France and Switzerland!

French teacher Christina Maerlender will be taking a student group to France and Switzerland! Organized by Jumpstreet Tours, an educational travel company with a long tradition of planning trips for New England schools, this once-in-a-lifetime adventure will delve into the history, culture, and stunning beauty of these two wonderful countries.

The group will visit Chamonix, including a trip to magnificent Mont Blanc, where they’ll climb 12,600 feet in a cable car to l’Aiguille du Midi and visit the stunning Lac Bleu at the foot of l’Aiguille du Peigne. A trip to Gruyères will include a workshop about one of the most famous Swiss cheeses around, and at Maison Cailler the group will learn the divine secrets of Swiss milk chocolate. They’ll also feast in local restaurants, including one in Dijon, where they’ll learn all about Jean Naigeon, whose idea to swap verjuice (unripe grapes) for vinegar in his mustard recipe birthed the now-famous Dijon mustard.

The group will also make their way to Versailles, where they’ll tour the famous Palace of Versailles and its breathtaking property. Last, but certainly not least, the group will be treated to the very best of Paris, the City of Lights! The tour guide, who will be with the group for the duration of the trip, will guide them through all the highlights, from the iconic Eiffel Tower to the Louvre to the magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral.

The price for this 9-day, 7-night trip starts at $3,345. It includes roundtrip airfare, ground transportation, accommodations, a personal tour guide, and all programming and meals as listed in the itinerary.
