At Housemeeting on Nov. 12, faculty member Jake Steward, a coach of the Debate and Public Speaking Society, announced the results of the 17th Annual Parliamentary Debate Tournament at The Hotchkiss School. SBS sent two novice teams of four students each to the tournament held on Nov. 11. SBS students competed in two rounds of Parliamentary Debate and two rounds of Impromptu Speaking.

Steward noted that there were a total of 90 novice debaters competing from various schools at the tournament and it was the first time in competition for some of the SBS speakers. In addition, several students “shadowed” competitors in order to get a sense of what it’s like to be part of a competition.

In Impromptu Speaking, two SBS students excelled. Both Kate Swasey ’21 and Ira Hysi ’20 placed 1st and 2nd in their rooms. In addition, Swasey placed 6th overall and Hysi placed 5th overall in Impromptu Speaking.

The next competition that SBS will attend is at Buckingham Brown and Nichols on Dec. 2. Read more about debate and public speaking at SBS here.
