Stoneleigh-Burnham students participated in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) on February 7, 2019. This contest is run by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and is aimed at developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students across the country. Students from SBS participated in either the division for 9th and 10th graders or the division for 11th and 12th graders. Winners of the contest were announced at Housemeeting on April 15 by Math Department Chair Andrew Bergdahl and are listed below:

11/12 Grade Division
1st place: Claire Su ’20
2nd place: Jiayi Zhao ’19
3rd place: Linda Yang ’20

9/10 Grade Division
1st place: Lucy Wu ’22
2nd place: Una Wu ’21
3rd place: Olly Ajao ’21

In announcing the contest winners, Bergdahl also gave a special recognition to Ira Hysi ’20, who is president of the math club at SBS,  for her enthusiasm about math and leading others. He said Hysi worked tirelessly every week to bring a variety of skill and comfort levels to play with math and practice for the AMC, was involved in ordering tests, choosing the time of the event, and encouraging students to participate in the contest.
