The Stoneleigh-Burnham School Debate and Public Speaking Society team of Sophie Hathaway ’18, Victoria Subritzky Katz ’17, and Julia Thayer ’18 has returned from the International Independent School Public Speaking League tournament in West Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
Sophie made the finals in Dramatic Interpretation and was chosen to be an alternate for the U.S. team at the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championship, which will be held in Sydney, Australia next spring. Debate and Public Speaking Society Head Coach Paul Bassett explained that if any of the four top U.S. competitors who have been chosen to go to the World Championship are unable to compete, Sophie will have the opportunity to join the U.S. team.
Bassett said the competition in West Vancouver was tough but all three SBS students worked hard, learned a great deal, and had a very good experience overall. They competed along with more than 140 students from 45 schools from all over the world.
The next competition for the SBS Debate and Public Speaking Society will be December 4 at the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Conn.
