Head of School Stephanie Luebbers will host a Webinar this Wednesday, April 15, from 7-8 p.m. with Dean of Faculty Shawn Durrett and Alumnae Association President Kate Strousse ’13 to help keep you informed and involved.

SBS is adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students are continuing the school year through our distance learning program and we’ve added virtual programs for alumnae. The teachers are navigating across time zones – from Greenfield to Houston, Monterey, Seoul, Beijing, Spain, Kenya, and beyond.

Stephanie and her two panelists will discuss the challenges and bright spots of taking SBS online over the last few weeks. Stephanie, Shawn, and Kate will also answer your questions with help from SBS staff members.

On Thursday, May 7 alumnae are invited to join Head of School Stephanie Luebbers and Visual Arts Department Chair Sara Brown Gibbons ’98 at 7:00 p.m. EST via Zoom for our next SBS Webinar: Draw & Sip: Focus on the Visual Arts and Distance Learning.

Stephanie will share a school update before Sara shows us that students aren't the only ones who can participate in Distance Learning!

As she shares her experiences of teaching visual arts on a virtual platform, Sara will take us through an art lesson of our own — an SBS version of "Paint & Sip."

For those wanting to participate in the art lesson, you will need: two pieces of white paper (ideally not smaller than 8.5x11), pencil, eraser, and black pen or marker (an ultra fine Sharpie is ideal). Feel free to have your beverage of choice at hand for the "sip" portion!

Our students love our cookies! We hope you love them, too! We will be offering free cookies for pick-up on Friday, May 8, from 4-5:30pm by Coleman House, where we will have a table and tent set up for no-contact pickup.

Pie Pickup

Wear a mask.
Drive up and around the Oval to the blue doors.
Don't park until you get to the blue doors, and it's your turn to pick up; if others are ahead of you, just drive along as the line does until you get to the door.
Once your car gets to the blue doors, send one person to the tables to pick up your pie/treat.
Residents should exit the building from their exits, not the blue doors, and can approach (socially distanced) from the swing area.
(The pie varieties and the gluten/free vegan treats will be well marked and sectioned for a quick trip to the tables.)

Stephanie will be there - hanging out in the grass to the left of the doors - so she can say hello from afar.

Choreographers Avdeep Kaur, Alice (Xiandong) Lin, Kate Swasey, Serafina Walker, and Tessa Yohan will share their latest dance creations via Zoom. Despite the challenges of social distancing and virtual learning, these students have choreographed and recorded their solos at home in their own spaces. There are two Flu vaccines, one for under age 65 and one for over 65. Please email me directly if you will need the over age 65 vaccine which provides more immunity.

New this summer! The Stoneleigh-Burnham School (SBS) Horsemanship Day Camp for novice and beginner riders. Enthusiasm and a love of horses are the only two requirements! (SBS will provide the rest!)

Join SBS’s experienced and knowledgeable riding instructors for one or two weeks for an introduction to horsemanship and riding. The goal of our program is to allow campers the opportunity to learn practical horsemanship skills, including grooming, handling, tacking, feeding and beginner rider skills in a safe, fun environment.

This program is for campers ages 7-12 and runs Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM. COVID-19 protocols will be strictly enforced. Space is limited so register today!

Stoneleigh-Burnham School is pleased to announce, Truth and Lies in America, an exhibition by Kelly Popoff.

The work in this exhibition is a product of the artist’s exploration of Americana over the past four years, including doll collections, gun collections, antique furniture, clothing patterns, model home kits, yearbooks, toys, and more. The artist was instinctively drawn to these materials as a way to make sense of the current cultural climate in the United States. By looking back in time, the artist looks for connections that may explain why American history seems so present and unresolved.

Popoff’s creative life is deeply influenced by her childhood experiences at home and in her Catholic
school education, and especially by the injustices she felt in both realms. The fraught social dynamics she experienced at home and in school continue to fuel her desire to expose abuses of power. The artist addresses social concerns, often pertaining to children, animals, and others particularly vulnerable to manipulation.

Imagery of housing and clothing serve as analogues for people, and are recurring themes in this body of work. This imagery enables the artist to address issues of being human without the presence of a specific person. The artist uses these analogues to intimately describe both people she knows personally, and people she does not. These works are sacred spaces of joy and pain.

Kelly Popoff (b. Akron, OH) is an artist and educator living and working in Greenfield, MA. Recent solo shows include At Home with Our Histories (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill), O Children (Herter Gallery, University of Massachusetts, Amherst), and Rock on Doily (Augusta Savage Gallery, University of Massachusetts, Amherst). Recent honors include Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship in Drawing (2020), The Clowes Fund Fellowship and Residency, Vermont Studio Center (2019), Millay Colony Fellow (2018), The Artist’s Resource Trust Fellowship and Residency, Vermont Studio Center (2017), The Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation Grant (2017), Promise Award, Sustainable Arts Foundation (2016), and Finalist Award, Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship in Painting (2016). Popoff has exhibited internationally, including shows curated by Camilo Alvarez (Samson Projects), Carter E. Foster (Curator of Drawing, Whitney Museum of American Art), Trenton Doyle Hancock, Richard Klein (Director, Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum), Deborah Rockman, and Rachel Wolff (art critic and writer).

COVID-19 Immunization Clinic on Campus

SBS is now requiring all employees and all eligible students to have a COVID booster. We have scheduled an on-campus vaccination clinic for students and employees on Wednesday, February 2 from 2:00 pm-6:00 pm and, as a result, will extend the booster deadline through February 2, 2022.

Below is the link for pre-registration for the COVID immunization clinic sponsored by Behavioral Health Network. Also attached is the demographic form. Both the pre-registration form and the demographic form need to be completed before the day of the clinic. Parent signatures are required for all students under 18. The demographic form should be filled out and returned to school.

Please send a picture of your student’s vaccination card once the booster is complete to healthctr@sbschool.org.

person celebration of the 2022 Poet’s Seat Poetry Contest finalists!

The Geissler Gallery, Stoneleigh Burnham School

Tuesday, May 17 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

Finalists will read their winning submissions from the three contest categories: Adult, Youth
(Ages 12-14), and Youth (Ages 15-18).

Geissler Gallery is wheelchair accessible and has an accessible restroom. Signs will be posted
directing you to the parking lot nearest the Geissler Gallery. For the audience, seating will be
distanced and please be masked except when eating and/or drinking.

This contest draws poets from across Franklin County. We hope you can join us to hear their

This event will take place in the Fuller Lounge at the Stoneleigh-Burnham Equestrian Center.
Join current student equestrians and alumnae for a lecture presented by Edward E. "Denny" Emerson.

Denny began riding around the age of nine at the then Stoneleigh-Prospect Hill School, when his father was headmaster. He represented the United States in the 1974 World Championships and was part of the victorious U.S. team that won the gold.

An eventer, trainer, coach, author, leader, activist, he has been a significant, influential force in the equestrian community for a half-century. He and his wife, May, live on and run Tamarack Hill Farms in Strafford, VT and Southern Pines, NC.

SBS Animation Camp - Session 1

Animation Camp: a camp for girls & boys ages 11-16 interested in animation.

Animation I: Animation I focuses on 2D, hand-drawn animation. It covers the basics of what animation is and a variety of techniques for creating it. Over the course of a week, campers work on a number of animation exercises as well as a *short* cumulative project. In addition to practicing the fundamentals, there is time dedicated to experimentation and exploring other forms of animation.

Each year, Clarity hosts several Application Info Webinars for families. All families who may be applying to any Clarity school are welcome to attend any of these webinars. During the live session, they will go over some key aspects of the application, things to look out for, materials to gather, how to get help, how the tax verification process works, and a robust Q&A. Typically these will run for about 60 minutes but will remain live longer if there are lots of questions from parents. They will make the recordings available to you after each webinar.
