On July 6, Head of School Stephanie Luebbers announced that SBS will be delivering its mission remotely for the first half of the 2020-21 school year. This decision was made with thoughtful consideration in order to best ensure the safety of our students and our extended community. SBS is committed to providing a consistent and robust learning experience to our students, no matter where they are in the world, and this commitment to the mission, values, and culture of the school is at the heart of our work.
About SBS MORE:
When Stoneleigh-Burnham made a quick shift to distance learning in March, the feedback we received from students, families, and faculty was that it was a remarkably smooth and successful transition in a time of crisis. Now, with the decision to be fully remote for the fall, we have focused our resources and time to further enhance our remote experience in numerous ways. In addition to adopting a new learning management system called Canvas, which is widely used at high schools and universities and accessible around the world, we partnered with One Schoolhouse, an educational organization that trains faculty at hundreds of school on online course programming. This decision to engage our faculty in extensive professional training gives us the opportunity to provide an enhanced and equitable remote experience for all of our students.
We have named our distance learning program MORE because it is. The experience we offer our SBS students is not your average distance learning program. It has been evaluated and designed through the lens of distance learning to better serve our students’ unique interests, abilities, and circumstances. Our MORE program includes formal co-curricular programs, class meetings, remote social events for students, wellness and physical activity programming, strong student support systems (e.g., comprehensive college counseling, health & wellness counseling, and academic support services), and important diversity, equity & inclusion training. As a small school with a 151-year history, we are confident that this remote experience will enhance our students’ skills, making us a stronger and more connected community.
