Advanced English Language

Advanced English Language (EL) is designed to meet the linguistic and academic needs of 9th and 10th grade students at an advanced level of English. Students in Advanced EL build upon their academic vocabulary, grammar skills, and academic writing, reading speaking, and listening throughout the year. Students read from appropriately challenging texts which connect to their learning in a variety of relatable contexts. Inferential reasoning, literary analysis, and formal essay writing are emphasized to help prepare students for grade-level English classes. Students in Advanced EL also receive language support as needed in their history classes. When students are prepared to enter the grade level English class, they may do so with the support of the Extension Program for as long as is appropriate. The decision to transition a student to grade-level classes is the responsibility of the EL teacher and the grade level teacher.
