Financial Aid

Philosophy

Stoneleigh-Burnham School (SBS) is committed to enrolling a diverse student body comprised
of students who are appropriate for our mission and our program. In order to enroll, families are
expected to be responsible for full tuition each year. We realize that this is a considerable
investment. We also are aware that not all families are able to afford the total cost of this
exceptional education.

Financial Aid awards are determined by the financial need of the family, taking into
consideration a family’s income and expenses, assets and debts, number of family members, cost
of living index, etc. In addition, four merit scholarships are offered. When granting financial aid
awards, SBS is, in essence, investing in a partnership with each of the most qualified students
requesting financial aid. It is expected that these students uphold their commitment to the
partnership by exhibiting their greatest efforts in academics, athletics, arts, leadership,
community service opportunities, and all other aspects of school life.

SBS has an annual financial aid budget of approximately $2.5 million, and provides need-based
financial aid awards to approximately 40% of our students. The requests and need for financial
aid far exceed our budget. Therefore, we are not able to offer all accepted students a financial aid
award. Some students will be put on a financial aid waitlist, with no promise of receiving
financial aid, even if they qualify for such aid.

Financial Aid Procedure

The Admissions Committee reviews application folders and determines which students receive
letters of acceptance, regardless of the financial need of the family. Those accepted students
whose families have completed and submitted the required financial aid paperwork in a timely
manner will then be reviewed by the Financial Aid Committee. Both parents are required to
submit all necessary financial documentation, regardless of marital status.

How to Apply for Financial Aid

  1. The Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) should be completed online with the School and Student Service (SSS) by NAIS at sssbynais.org by January 30th. New families should complete the statement as soon as possible. You may estimate income and expenses if the exact numbers are not known. The Financial Aid Office will make corrections by referring to the IRS Form 1040. Here’s the information you need to apply via NAIS.
  2. Both custodial and non-custodial parents should upload a signed copy of their 2016 IRS Form 1040 with all schedules and statements as well as their 2017 W-2s to the SSS account or submit a paper copy to the Financial Aid Office on or before February 15*. The 2017 IRS Form 1040 with all schedules and statements should be uploaded as soon as feasible.
  3. Once your daughter has been accepted, and we have received the necessary paperwork, the Financial Aid Committee will meet to review your request for financial aid. The following paperwork is required:
    • copies of your current and previous year’s Income Tax Returns
    • copies of your W-2 forms for last year and previous year
    • parents’ financial statement (PFS) submitted to SSS.
