Sharvari Bhatt ’16, of Christ Church, Barbados, has been selected to compete in the state-level public speaking competition run by the Lions Club of Massachusetts. This year’s topic was designated by the Lions Club of Massachusetts (Lions Multiple District 33) to be, “Respect: Where has it gone?”
The competition is open to all students who reside within or attend school located within MD33, including foreign exchange, charter school, private school, home schooled, or independent study students in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12, provided they are sponsored by a Massachusetts Lions, Lioness, or Leo Club. To learn more about this competition, please see the Massachusetts Lions Public Speaking Competition website.
Sharvari has been sponsored by the local chapter of the Lions Club in Greenfield, MA. She will compete against 4-6 other students at the club level. The winner of that competition will advance to the zone competition, where she/he will face 4-6 other club-level winners. The top 2 place earners from the zone-level competition will advance to the region competition, which is comprised of two zones. The top place earner of the region competition advances to the district-level, with one qualifier per district moving into the state-level competition.
There are prizes and/or awards for each contestant at every level of competition. The prizes at the State Competition are $1,500 to the winner and $500 to each runner up. Prizes at other levels of competition are at the discretion of the Clubs or District Governor.
Sharvari presented her speech publicly for the first time at our school’s Housemeeting on Monday, October 13th and will work to refine her speech for the club-level competition. Congratulations to Sharvari and best of luck as you move forward!
